You’ll need your Tangem cards, a phone with NFC (any iPhone from the 7 onwards, most Android phones from the last several years), and a few minutes without interruptions.
What Tangem Wallet is
Tangem Wallet is a hardware wallet in the shape of a bank card. The private key is generated inside a secure chip on the card and never leaves it. You hold the card against your phone to sign transactions through the Tangem app, and that’s the whole interface: no cable, no battery, no screen on the card.

Setting up Tangem Wallet, step by step
1. Install the official app
Search for Tangem on the App Store or Google Play and check the publisher is Tangem AG before you install. Fake wallet apps exist, and this is the one point in the process where a wrong tap costs you. If in doubt, follow the download link on tangem.com rather than searching.
2. Scan your first card
Open the app and hold a card flat against the back of your phone. On an iPhone the NFC reader is near the top; on most Android phones it’s in the middle. The app reads the card and runs an authenticity check against Tangem’s servers. A new card should show as brand new, with no wallet on it. If the app says the card has already been activated, stop and contact us before going further.
3. Create the wallet
Tap Create wallet. The chip generates the private key internally using its own random number generator. Nothing is sent to your phone or to Tangem. 4. Link your backup cards
This is the step that matters most, and the one people skip because the app lets them. When prompted, tap each remaining card in turn. The key is copied securely onto each one, so you end up with two or three identical cards.
Backups can only be added during setup. If you skip this and later lose your only card, there is no recovery. Do it now, with all the cards from the box.
5. Set an access code
The access code is what protects you if a card is lost or stolen. Without it a card can’t sign anything, and the chip locks after repeated wrong attempts. Pick something you’ll remember but that isn’t your phone PIN. You can also turn on Face ID or fingerprint in the app to save typing it every time.
6. Add your first coins
Tap the token list, add Bitcoin or whatever you hold, and the app shows a receive address. Send a small test amount first from your exchange, confirm it arrives, then move the rest. Our exchange-to-Tangem guide covers the NZ exchanges in detail.
That’s the setup done. Put one card in your wallet if you want quick access, and the others somewhere separate.
The mistakes we see most often
- Creating the wallet on one card and leaving the others in the box unlinked. Backups must be added at setup.
- Keeping all three cards together. A house fire or a burglary then takes the lot.
- Writing the access code on the card sleeve.
- Installing a look-alike app from a search result.
- Buying second-hand or from an overseas marketplace listing with no way to confirm the cards are unused.
Is Tangem Wallet safe?
The chip is a Samsung secure element certified to EAL6+, the same class of component used in passports and payment cards. The firmware was audited by Kudelski Security and Riscure and is written once at the factory; it can’t be updated, which also means it can’t be tampered with after the fact. The key never leaves the chip, so there’s nothing for malware on your phone to copy.
The honest limitations are these. Your phone needs NFC. There’s no screen on the card, so you verify the transaction on your phone rather than on the device. And if you lose every card and chose not to make a seed phrase, the wallet is gone. The backup cards exist precisely to make that last scenario hard to reach.

Keeping it safe after setup
Store the cards in different places. Don’t photograph them. Keep your phone’s operating system current, since the app runs on it. And check each card once or twice a year by scanning it, so you know the backups still work before you need them.
