Tangem Wallet Review NZ 2026 – Is This Crypto Wallet Worth Buying?

We sell Tangem wallets, so read this review with that in mind. What we can offer is a view from the counter: which questions people ask before they buy, what they like once they have used it for a few months, and where it is honestly not the right fit.

Short version: Tangem is a card-based cold wallet. There is no USB cable, no charging and no seed phrase unless you want one. You tap the card on your phone, enter your access code in the Tangem app, and approve the transaction. For most people moving coins off an exchange in New Zealand, that is a sensible place to land in 2026.

What the Tangem wallet is

Tangem Wallet cards

The Tangem wallet sold in NZ is a hardware wallet the size of a bank card. Instead of keeping your private key on a device with a screen, it keeps it inside a certified chip on the card. Day to day it goes like this:

  1. Install the Tangem app (iOS or Android).
  2. Tap your card on the back of your NFC-enabled phone.
  3. Check the details and approve the transaction.

The key stays on the card. The phone only ever sees the signed transaction.

Tangem publishes the full specifications on its own site at https://tangem.com/en/. If you want to buy in New Zealand, we stock the range at https://tangem.nz/ and you can browse the sets on the https://tangem.nz/shop/ page.

How the wallet works in 2026

Private keys stay offline

Each card has a Samsung secure element certified to EAL6+, the same class of chip used in passports and bank cards. The key is generated on the chip when you set the wallet up and it never leaves. Tangem’s firmware was audited by Kudelski Security and Riscure, and it cannot be updated after manufacture, so nobody can push new code to your card later.

Setup takes a few minutes

Open the app, tap the first card, set an access code, then tap the backup cards so they all share the same key. Sets come with two or three cards. You do not have to write down a recovery phrase, although the app lets you create one if you prefer that model. Our setup guide walks through it screen by screen.

No battery, no cables

There is no screen, no USB port and no battery to wear out. The card is rated IP69K for water and dust and comes with a 25-year warranty. In practice that means you can put a backup card in a drawer at a relative’s house and not think about it for years.

Tangem vs traditional hardware wallets

Here is how the card compares with a typical USB wallet that has its own screen:

Form factorNFC cardUSB or Bluetooth device
Seed phraseOptionalRequired
ScreenNoYes
BatteryNoOften
SetupVery simpleModerate
PortabilityFits in a walletPocket-sized

The trade-off is the screen. A device with its own display lets you confirm the receiving address on hardware the phone cannot touch. With Tangem you read the details in the app. For most holders that is fine; for someone signing complex DeFi transactions every day, it is a fair reason to look at a screen-based device. We go into this properly in Tangem vs Ledger vs Trezor.

Is Tangem safe?

The chip is the strong part. Because the key never leaves the card, malware on your phone has nothing to steal, and Tangem the company has no copy to lose either.

The backup cards replace the paper seed phrase. If you lose one card, the others still work, and you can order a replacement set and move your funds across. If you lose all of them and never made a seed phrase, the funds are gone, so keep the backup cards in different places.

What the chip cannot do is stop you approving a bad transaction. The scams we hear about involve fake apps, fake support staff and phishing links, not broken chips. A few habits cover most of it:

  • Only install the Tangem app from the official App Store or Google Play listing.
  • Never type a seed phrase or access code into a website or send it to “support”.
  • Keep the app updated.

Our guide to phishing and fake apps has the longer list.

Who the Tangem wallet suits in NZ

The people who get the most out of it are usually moving funds off an exchange for the first time, holding for the long term, or simply want a cold wallet they can set up without a manual. It also suits anyone who has put off self-custody because the 24-word seed phrase felt like a liability.

Experienced users

It works for them too, with caveats. Plenty of experienced holders use a Tangem card for long-term storage and keep a separate setup for active trading. If you want on-device address verification for every transaction, a screen-based wallet will feel more familiar.

Tangem Pay and what is coming

Tangem has been rolling out Tangem Pay, a payment card linked to the wallet, in selected markets. Availability depends on the country, so check Tangem’s own site before counting on it here. The wallet itself does not depend on it: storage, sending and receiving all work the same either way.

More people now manage crypto from their phone than from a desktop, and a wallet designed around the phone fits that habit.

Cold wallet vs hot wallet

A hot wallet keeps its keys on an internet-connected device such as your phone or laptop. A cold wallet keeps them offline. Tangem counts as cold storage because the key lives on the card, and nothing can be signed without the card physically touching your phone.

For long-term holdings, cold storage is generally the safer choice. Our piece on wallet vs exchange storage covers why.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very quick setup
  • Card form factor you can carry in a wallet
  • EAL6+ secure element, audited firmware
  • No battery or charging
  • Backup cards instead of a mandatory seed phrase
  • Supports 90+ networks and 16,000+ tokens in the app

Cons

  • No built-in screen for address checks
  • Needs a phone with NFC
  • Desktop-first users may prefer something else

Value for money

A 3-card colourway set is NZ$139.99 and the 2-card set is NZ$109.99, both including GST. For that you get a cold wallet with no ongoing costs, no battery to replace and a 25-year warranty. If the main thing stopping you from moving off an exchange has been complexity, it removes most of it.

One caution about reviews in general: crypto attracts fake ones. Check that any review you rely on comes from someone who has actually used the product, and buy from an authorised seller so you know the cards have not been tampered with.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is Tangem Wallet NZ safe for crypto storage in New Zealand?

Yes. The key is generated and stored on an EAL6+ certified chip and never leaves the card. The main risks are scams and lost backups, not the hardware.

2. Can I use Tangem wallet like a payment card?

Not the wallet card itself. Tangem Pay is a separate payment product being rolled out in selected countries, so check Tangem’s site for current availability.

3. Does the wallet support multiple crypto assets?

Yes. The app supports 90+ networks and 16,000+ tokens, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana.

4. How does Tangem compare vs traditional hardware wallets?

It drops the screen, cable and battery, and makes the seed phrase optional. You give up on-device address verification in exchange for a much simpler setup.

5. Is Tangem good for experienced crypto users?

For long-term storage, yes. Heavy DeFi users who want to verify every address on a separate screen may prefer a screen-based device for that part of their activity.

6. Where can I buy Tangem wallet NZ?

From us at https://tangem.nz/. The full range is on the https://tangem.nz/shop/ page, and orders ship from Auckland.

Our verdict

Tangem will not replace every hardware wallet for every person. For most New Zealand holders who want their coins off an exchange without learning a new device, it is worth a serious look.

If you want to start with the basics, the Tangem Wallet in Classic Black is a 3-card set, or compare options in our 2-card vs 3-card guide. Buy genuine Tangem wallets from Tangem NZ, an authorised New Zealand seller shipping from Auckland.
